The municipality of Karpos is the most athletic municipality in the Republic of Macedonia. It
proudly protects this acknowledgement gained half a decade ago. To earn this, the Municipality
in its sports existence boosted and branded a dozen of sports activities and manifestations
that became a synonym for the sport culture of the local self-government. The municipality of
Karpos at its own initiative headed by the mayor Stevcho Jakimovski, organized the first school
sports football, basketball, girls’ volleyball and chess leagues in all ten elementary schools
existing under this urban municipality.
The municipality of Karpos cherishes this ancient Persian game as is euphemistically called
“the wise men game” since the very beginning. Every year, along with the Macedonian chess
club Gambit Asseco SEE introduces hundreds of students to this ancient game and discovers a
dozen of talents that in near future could become chess masters, international masters or even
Nevertheless, that was only the first spark, the nascent one. In 2010, in order to mark the
Karpos Day, 3rd November, the municipality organized the first chess tournament which
over the years has grown into a tradition, the so called New Year`s and Christmas’ Chess
Tournament of the Municipality of Karpos.
No matter how modest and enthusiastic the beginnings were and the entrance into a new
chess tradition, which traces back a few decades ago in the country`s chess memory, yet with
the endurance, the love and the devotion to this sport, the municipality of Karpos succeeded
to reach the summit. Of course, the ‘Queen’ in the creation of the new chess history in the
municipality of Karpos is Karpos Open International Tournament, which this year will be
organized for a fifth time, which is also general sponsor in collaboration with the already
proven partner, the chess club Gambit Asseco SEE. This club is a twofold champion at the
national chess championship, quadruple runner-up in the Republic of Macedonia, participant
of the European Chess Club Cup and a winner of dozens of other national and international
This major international chess tournament raised the Municipality in the European and
world chess heights as an organizer of one of the greatest tournaments in Europe, and in the
world as well. With the participation of 200 to 300 chess players from Europe and beyond,
Karpos Open has became a desirable tournament for eminent chess names, international
and grandmasters from Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, from all of the former Yugoslav
countries and many others.
As a reminder, Alexandra Konsteniuk, a former Women’s World Chess champion, as
well as the former European and world winner Antoaneta Stefanova from Bulgaria, six or seven
former youth winners, and highly ranked chess names were guests at the Karpos Open. By
organizing this particular tournament, the municipality of Karpos successfully manages not only
to invest in the future of the chess game and to encourage the love of the youth towards chess,
but also to keep the memory of Skopje and the Republic of Macedonia alive, as a center of the
world chess event starting from 1972 and the famous World Chess Olympiad.
The high level organization of Karpos Open and of all chess manifestations in this urban
municipality, nobly supported and encouraged by the first man of the municipality, Stevcho
Jakimovski, recommended Karpos to be a host and organizer of the European Chess Club Cup,
which will take place from 17th to 25th October this year in the Alexander Palace Hotel.
During this year, 200 reputed chess players are expected to take part at the Karpos
Open 2015 Tournament, which will be held from 27th March to 3rd April. In addition, around
700 chess players from all around Europe are expected to participate at the European Chess
Club Cup Championship in October as well as more than hundreds of thousands chess fans to
follow online the most quality duels between the top players online.
Karpos continues to move forward to its path to success and to cultivate the chess game
and culture. We are still the Mecca of the two thousand years old “a wise men game”.
